    Pre-conference Institute
    Developing Literacy in Spanish

While there are many similarities between developing literacy in Spanish and in English, there are also some key differences. This pre-conference institute focuses on the differences in the structures of Spanish and English and how these differences impact literacy instruction. The TEKS that are impacted by these differences are addressed. There is a focus on classroom implications. The goal is for bilingual teachers to understand the structure of Spanish and how it impacts literacy instruction as well as to develop a repertoire of teaching strategies.

    Marq weaver

Dr. Laurie Weaver and Dr. Judith Márquez are professors of bilingual and multicultural education at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Each has over 30 years of experience working with bilingual learners. Their public school teaching experiences range from Prekindergarten to high school. At the university level, they teach undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students. Drs. Weaver and Márquez have consulted nationally with a special focus on biliteracy development. Known for their ability to bridge theory into practice, this preconference institute is applicable to anyone working with Spanish-speaking English language learners. This institute will be presented in English and Spanish.
